Raúl Asencio focuses on Clement Turpin’s refereeing: “It’s the same situation and they call a penalty for them.”
Real Madrid lost again in the Champions League. Having just been defeated by Liverpool , they were beaten by another English side, Manchester City, at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite showing improvement, Xabi Alonso ‘s men fell once more, and Thibaut Courtois was the only goal to keep them out of the competition .
Some, however, were left with the criticism of Clement Turpin ‘s refereeing . Movistar cameras captured the Real Madrid coach going to protest several decisions in the tunnel before the start of the second half, after a penalty had been awarded against them.
The focus of the complaints was that minutes after Erling Haaland converted the penalty , Raúl Asencio went down in the Manchester City penalty area in a challenge with Gvardiol , and no foul was called. And it certainly didn’t look like one, as both players were grabbing each other, unlike Rüdiger ‘s challenge on Haaland.
“I felt a grab, and I fell because of the momentum. We were coming off their corner goal, which I think Rüdiger wasn’t able to jump for because of the push. Then the penalty was the same situation and it was given. These are refereeing decisions, we have to focus on football. Sometimes it goes the opponent’s way and sometimes it goes ours ,” Asencio said with some annoyance.
The center-back also spoke about what he saw on the pitch, which, although there was improvement, wasn’t enough to break their losing streak. “Manchester City is a great rival, but today they didn’t do everything to win the game. We perhaps deserved more. But that’s football; the team that scores the most goals wins. So we have to improve,” he emphasized.
