Rufai, iconic Nigerian goalkeeper who played for Deportivo and Hercules, dies

Peter Rufai, the iconic Nigerian goalkeeper who played for Deportivo de la Coruña and Hércules, has died in his home country at the age of 61 due to cardiac arrest. The Nigerian Football Federation confirmed this on social media.

“We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and 1994 AFCON champion. His legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest in peace, Peter Rufai,” the Nigerian national team announced on their X account.

“Deportivo expresses its condolences for the passing of Peter Rufai, a Depor player from 1997 to 1999. We extend all the love of Deportivo to his family and friends. RIP,” the Galician club lamented.
