Xabi Alonso: “My future? I’m focused on the next match. The important thing here is Real Madrid.”
Xabi Alonso spoke to Movistar Plus before appearing before the media in the Bernabéu press room.
The match
“None of us have anything to reproach ourselves for. We tried until the very end, we started the game very well, we took the lead, but there are moments when any setback hurts more, and that’s what happened. They took the lead in 10 minutes, from a corner, from a penalty, when the game was serious, competitive, but we conceded, we didn’t control those situations well, and then the team tried until the end, we had chances, we lacked the finishing touch to score a goal, and I don’t have anything to reproach anyone for.”
Did that 1-1 draw do that much damage?
“When you’re in a delicate moment, not just in terms of our performance, but also considering where we’ve come from, with the injuries we’re dealing with right now… you feel a bit less solid. And that’s what allowed them to come back too quickly. In these kinds of matches, you have to concede very little, and we did, but it was enough for them to turn it around. And then… when things aren’t going your way, you still have chances, a few in the second half to score, but we couldn’t convert them.”
Does he understand the whistles?
“There have been all sorts of moments; also some where they applauded and pushed us hard until the end. We tried. And we’re obviously not happy with our current run of form; but I have nothing to reproach. And never the fans, because they’ve seen a lot and know a lot about this. And not the players today either.”
Did you have time to see the controversial plays?
Actions you see… in the first goal, they grab Courtois a bit. Well, plays that, from my perspective, I interpret differently. The referee saw it that way and it was decisive. I don’t know, I haven’t been able to watch it again…”
What did you think of that hug from Rodrygo?
“I’m really happy for him, because he was coming off a tough time, not playing much, and today Rodrygo was fantastic. He played really well, he was a real game-changer, and he scored that goal, which is so important for him. The fact that we were able to see him play is one of the best things that happened today. And then there’s the support of the fans, the team… that’s all there. And together is how we’ll turn things around. I’m grateful for that.”
Are you worried about your short-term future?
“I’m focused on the next match. The important thing here is Real Madrid. It’s about the team, the players, and how I can help them. This isn’t about me.”
